چکیده

Ultrafast dynamics in atomic, molecular and condensed-matter systems are increasingly being studied using optical-pump, X-ray probe techniques where subpicosecond laser pulses excite the system and X-rays detect changes in absorption spectra and local atomic structure(1-3). New opportunities are appearing as a result of improved synchrotron capabilities and the advent of X-ray free-electron lasers(4,5). These source improvements also allow for the reverse measurement: X-ray pump followed by optical probe. We describe here how an X-ray pump beam transforms a thin GaAs specimen from a strong absorber into a nearly transparent window in less than 100 ps, for laser photon energies just above the bandgap. We find the opposite effect-X-ray induced optical opacity-for photon energies just below the bandgap. This raises interesting questions about the ultrafast many-body response of semiconductors to X-ray absorption, and provides a new approach for an X-ray/optical cross-correlator for synchrotron and X-ray free-electron laser applications.

Thomson scattering on inhomogeneous targets.

The introduction of brilliant free-electron lasers enables new pump-probe experiments to characterize warm dense matter states. For instance, a short-pulse optical laser irradiates a liquid hydrogen jet that is subsequently probed with brilliant soft x-ray radiation. The strongly inhomogeneous plasma prepared by the optical laser is characterized with particle-in-cell simulations. The interacti...

Status of the Lcls Experiment Timing System*

SLAC, Menlo Park, CA 94309, USA Abstract X-ray / optical laser pump probe experiments are used for a significant fraction of the scientific work performed at LCLS.[1] The experimental laser systems are locked to the timing of the electron beam through a combination of RF and optical fiber based systems. The remaining ~100 femtosecond RMS jitter of the X-rays relative to the optical laser is mea...

Picosecond laser-pump, x-ray probe spectroscopy of GaAs

A laser-pump, x-ray probe spectroscopic experiment is described, and the results are shown. The Ga Ka x-ray fluorescence following x-ray absorption, at the Ga K absorption edge was measured, and its increase due to excitation with subpicosecond pulses of laser light at 4.6 eV photon energy was determined. The x-ray absorption, and thus the fluorescence, is increased for about 200 ps after the l...

Femtosecond x-ray pulse characterization in free-electron lasers using a cross-correlation technique.

We report the first measurements of x-ray single-pulse duration and two-pulse separation at the Linac Coherent Light Source using a cross-correlation technique involving x rays and electrons. An emittance-spoiling foil is adopted as a very simple and effective method to control the output x-ray pulse. A minimum pulse duration of about 3 fs full width at half maximum has been measured together w...

Self-assembled ErAs islands in GaAs: Growth and subpicosecond carrier dynamics

We report the growth of self-assembled ErAs islands embedded in GaAs by molecular beam epitaxy. The nucleation of ErAs on GaAs occurs in an island growth mode leading to spontaneous formation of nanometer-sized islands. Several layers of ErAs islands separated by GaAs can be stacked on top of each other to form a superlattice. X-ray diffraction shows superlattice fringes from such samples. Pump...
